It retains integrity from two periods of development. It is Uxbridge's largest and best-preserved school building built before 1930, and its only 19th-century school architecture apart from several one-room district schools and the Uxbridge Academy Building.","narrative":"North Uxbridge School, at 87 East Hartford Avenue, is a two-story wooden schoolhouse on a brick foundation, set on a hillside in a residential area overlooking the Crown & Eagle Mills. It was built in two stages. The rear section, in the Italianate style, dates to about 1870-75 and may have been moved from the earlier school site at 196 East Hartford Avenue. In 1900 a Colonial Revival front section was added at a cost of $16,000 to serve the area's growing population, designed by Cutting, Carleton & Cutting of Worcester. The symmetrical facade has a center entry with pilasters and an arched transom, flanked by oval lights, beneath a modillioned cornice, hip roof, pedimented dormers and a cupola. The rear portions have corner pilasters, a dentiled cornice and paired brackets. It is Uxbridge's largest and best-preserved school built before 1930, and the town's only 19th-century school architecture apart from several one-room district schools and the Uxbridge Academy Building.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Cutting, Carleton & Cutting of Worcester (1900)","architectural_style":"Italianate; Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Owned by the Town of Uxbridge; present use is the same as the original use, a school house.
