Farnum in the Renaissance Revival style. It sits at the north end of the town's commercial district.","why_significant":"It is described as one of Uxbridge's largest and best preserved commercial blocks and as the largest scale of commercial development in the town during the nineteenth century. It reflects the rebuilding of the Uxbridge Center commercial district after two fires in the mid-1890s, and it retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship.","narrative":"Built in 1895 at 2-6 North Main Street, this three-story brick commercial building anchors the north end of Uxbridge's commercial district. Its symmetrical facade has two ground-floor storefronts under a metal cornice. Above them, blind arches divide the upper floors into three bays, each holding paired windows, with decorative brick panels between the arches. A pressed metal cornice with modillions and egg-and-dart moldings crowns the roofline. The side walls are plain. The block follows a late Victorian plan, with stores on the first floor, storage and offices on the second, and a public hall on the third. A fire on March 19, 1895, destroyed several commercial buildings nearby, and the block appears on this site by 1898. Its first owner was H.S. Farnum, and the architect is unknown. It is regarded as one of the town's largest and best preserved commercial blocks. At the time of recording, the storefronts were boarded over and the building was vacant.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Renaissance Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant in the present-use field; the two ground-floor storefronts are boarded over and were rebuilt in the mid-20th century.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.656462-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/19/7932/63793219/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83004117.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004117/a67e4f1445-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004117/a67e4f1445-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:UxbridgeMA_FarnumBlock.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:UxbridgeMA_FarnumBlock.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793219","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farnum_Block","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5436059"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/farnum-block-83004117/"}
