It sits on a hillside lot in a mid-nineteenth-century residential district north of Uxbridge Common.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an excellent local example of Greek Revival architecture, virtually unaltered from its original design. It keeps its Doric porch, pedimented gables and corner-blocked window and door casings. It is also associated with Francis Deane, a local attorney for whom it was probably built.","narrative":"This 1½-storey wood-frame house at 58 North Main Street in Uxbridge dates to about 1845-1855 and is a well-preserved example of Greek Revival design. It has a side-hall plan, clapboard walls, a rock-faced granite foundation and a pitched roof. The east-facing front has a pedimented gable supported by Doric columns, with a recessed porch behind that continues along much of the south side. The original panelled door is framed by sidelights, panelled stiles and corner blocks, with a decorative panel above. The house was probably built for Francis Deane, a local attorney, who lived there until after 1870, when it passed to Edward J. Prest. Its importance rests mainly on architecture rather than on its owners. Alterations are limited, chiefly the conversion of gable windows to casements and a garage added around 1930. It is regarded as one of Uxbridge's best-preserved Greek Revival houses, retaining its original design, materials and setting.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a residence; the form lists present use as the same as the original (residence). Gable windows were converted to casements, and a garage (ca. 1930) stands on the lot.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.602085-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/99/7930/63793099/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83004116.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004116/168ce4f134-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004116/168ce4f134-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:UxbridgeMA_FrancisDeaneCottage2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:UxbridgeMA_FrancisDeaneCottage2.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793099","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Deane_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5480707"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/deane-francis-cottage-83004116/"}
