The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an important local example of a popular eighteenth-century house type. Although altered, it keeps its original plan, scale and some early details, and it retains its rural setting. It is one of the older remaining farmhouses in South Uxbridge and meets Criterion C.","narrative":"A modest one-storey timber-frame cottage with a central chimney, this house on Aldrich Street in South Uxbridge may date from the mid-eighteenth century. It was built without reference to the present road, and its south facade, with a central entry and asymmetrically placed windows, is not visible from the road. Twentieth-century changes include two-over-two sash and partly rebuilt first-storey window openings, yet projecting window frames in the gables, perhaps from about 1800 or earlier, survive. Map records name E. Cook as owner in 1855 and A. Cook in 1857 and 1870, the latter described as a farmer in 1870. By 1898 the house and a vanished barn east of it belonged to farmer John Hickey. The house was listed for its architecture because it preserves the plan, scale and rural setting of a popular eighteenth-century farmhouse type, making it one of the older surviving examples in the area.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Timber-frame vernacular","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a private residence; altered with later sash and rebuilt first-storey window openings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.837538-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/34/7931/63793134/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83004115.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004115/c230e87c2d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004115/c230e87c2d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:UxbridgeMA_AECookHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:UxbridgeMA_AECookHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793134","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._E._Cook_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4647718"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/cook-a-e-house-83004115/"}
