It is a central-chimney type with a later west wing and aluminum siding.","why_significant":"The house is significant mainly for its well-preserved, exceptionally fine Federalist trim, set against an otherwise vernacular central-chimney design. The entry and cornice are carved wood and resemble patterns from Asher Benjamin's guidebooks. The form notes few known historical associations and says the property meets criterion C.","narrative":"Built between about 1805 and 1820 at 3 Sutton Street in Uxbridge, this two-storey house follows the popular central-chimney plan common in the area. What sets it apart is its Federalist decoration. Narrow pilasters frame the south facade and support an ornate cornice. The central entry has pilasters, a band of lozenges, a frieze of swags and a cornice with mutules, enclosing a six-panel replacement door, sidelights and an elliptical fan. The ornament appears to be carved wood rather than composition pieces, and much of it resembles patterns in Asher Benjamin's early architectural guidebooks, possibly executed by a local carver. The main block rests on hammered granite, while a twentieth-century west wing sits on poured concrete. The house is valued for architectural quality rather than historical associations. It appears on an 1855 map, was owned by E. Brown by 1857, and later passed to the Nolan family. Its design, setting, location and workmanship remain well preserved.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federalist","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a private residence; alterations include 2/1 replacement sash, a screened porch on the east and a west wing added in the twentieth century.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.116665-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/79/7930/63793079/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83004109.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004109/35c574e778-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004109/35c574e778-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Tim Pierce","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:E._Brown_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Pierce</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:E._Brown_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793079","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._Brown_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5321760"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/brown-e-house-83004109/"}
