It is tied to Lowell's early agricultural tradition and to a Tewksbury family that held the land for over two hundred years. The land may also hold archaeological remains.","narrative":"Set well back from Andover Street in Lowell, this farmhouse and its large timber barn date from the early 19th century. The house was built in 1802 in the Federal style, reportedly by Eldad Worcester, and received Greek Revival trim, porch and interior details around 1840. It is a 2½-story clapboard building with a granite foundation, an original rear ell and two later additions. The barn, measuring 73 by 30 feet, has exposed pegged and braced framing that appears contemporary with the house. The land came from a 1641 grant to the widow of Governor Winthrop, and the Worcester family owned it from 1748 until 1954. It is the oldest house on Andover Street and one of the earliest in Lowell. The barn is considered unique in the city for its age, size and integrity. Together the buildings and surviving grounds preserve one of the few undisturbed 19th-century rural landscapes left in Lowell, and the land may hold archaeological evidence of past use.","period_of_significance":"1802","architect_builder":"Unknown (house said to have been erected in 1802 by Eldad Worcester, per local records of the 1890s)","architectural_style":"Federal with Greek Revival modifications (c. 1840)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Occupied private residence; the form lists the property as occupied and in private residential use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.285703-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/56/7955/63795556/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83004091.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004091/ac9484984c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004091/ac9484984c-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Daderot","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Worcester_House,_Lowell,_MA_-_DSC00077.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daderot</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Worcester_House,_Lowell,_MA_-_DSC00077.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"00000568","name":"Andover Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/andover-street-historic-district-00000568/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795556","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worcester_House_(Lowell,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8034189"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/worcester-house-83004091/"}
