It keeps its original features, including bay windows, moulded window hoods, bracketed cornices and a slate mansard roof. It also reflects the subdivision of the Frost estate and suburban growth near the Porter Square railroad station.","narrative":"Built in 1867 at the corner of Forest and Frost Streets in Cambridge, this clapboard house is a Second Empire design with a bell-cast mansard roof covered in fish-scale slates. It has a 2 1/2 storey main house with a side-hall plan and a 2 storey rear wing, both on brick foundations. Details include paired cornice brackets, moulded window hoods, bay windows and arched dormers. Inside, parquet floors, marble mantels and plaster cornices survive. The land came from the Frost family estate, which was subdivided into suburban house lots in the 1850s. William Frost, Jr., a merchant and real estate developer, built the house apparently on speculation near the Porter Square railroad station, which gave commuters direct service to Boston. Later owners included Eliza Homer and grocer Andrew J. Lovell, who lived there through the nineteenth century. Around 1920-1930 it became a two-family house and gained an east entry. Few intact houses of this type remain in the area.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built by William Frost, Jr.","architectural_style":"Second Empire","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is a two-family residence; the owners recently completed a certified rehabilitation.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.117229-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/40/7912/63791240/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83004030.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004030/de8d36c7fa-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004030/de8d36c7fa-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Homer_Lovell_House,_Cambridge_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Homer_Lovell_House,_Cambridge_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63791240","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homer-Lovell_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5889920"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/homer-lovell-house-83004030/"}
