It is also tied to the early settlement of Peabody and to the Southwick family, prominent in local industry, agriculture and commerce in the 18th and 19th centuries. The site may also hold buried remains related to the local ceramics industry.","narrative":"Southwick House at 151 Lowell Street in Peabody, Massachusetts, is a wood-frame gambrel-roofed house built around 1750. It has two and a half stories, a center chimney with two flues, a symmetrical five-bay facade and a rear ell that creates a \"Beverly Jog.\" Local tradition dates it to about 1660, but its architectural features point to the mid-18th century, probably during the ownership of Ebenezer Southwick. The interior keeps most of its original floor plan, floorboards, panelling and trim, and the house was restored in the 1970s. Its importance rests on its Georgian vernacular design and on the Southwick family, early Peabody settlers who farmed, tanned leather and operated pottery kilns producing black glazed redwares nearby. John Southwick, a Quaker, held several town duties in the 1600s. The land may also contain buried remains of structures and ceramic-related artifacts spanning more than 250 years of occupation.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Vernacular Georgian","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Occupied private residence in excellent condition, carefully restored in the 1970s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.662068-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/61/7946/63794661/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83003974.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83003974/a6e293f575-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83003974/a6e293f575-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PeabodyMA_SouthwickHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PeabodyMA_SouthwickHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794661","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southwick_House_(Peabody,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7571469"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/southwick-house-83003974/"}
