Phillips. It occupies a full city block near downtown with two outbuildings.","why_significant":"It is one of only a few surviving antebellum houses in Victoria and a locally rare example of Greek Revival architecture. It was built by Richard Owens, who built the first Victoria County Courthouse, for Alexander Phillips, a lawyer, senator and judge of statewide importance. Sam Houston was honored at a reception and ball there in 1857.","narrative":"Built in 1851, this two-story brick house at 705 North Craig Street in Victoria, Texas, is one of the few antebellum homes left in the city. Builder Richard Owens, who had constructed the first Victoria County Courthouse, designed it in the Greek Revival manner, with a symmetrical central-hall plan, a five-bay front, and a double gallery with slender Doric columns. The steep hipped roof suggests Louisiana influence. Alexander Phillips, a New York-born lawyer, state senator and judge, had it built and lived there until his death in 1880. He also helped found Aranama College. In 1857 a reception and ball for Governor Sam Houston was held at the house. Later owners added a rear kitchen wing, stuccoed the brick walls and scored them to resemble stone, and remodeled the interior, yet the house keeps much of its original character. It once stood amid orchards and still occupies an entire city block.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Richard Owens","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; restoration of the interior and exterior, including the dormers, was planned.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:19.355109-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/91/9738/40973891/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/83003824.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83003824/ec4bf3eb07-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83003824/ec4bf3eb07-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"ProfReader","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Judge_Alexander_H._Phillips_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">ProfReader</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Judge_Alexander_H._Phillips_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40973891","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110000526"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/victoria-county/phillips-judge-alexander-h-house-83003824/"}
