It also reflects Monroe's commerce, industry, community planning, landscape character and local history, notably through banker and mill president B.S. Walker.","narrative":"South Broad Street Historic District is a small residential neighborhood of about 17 properties on roughly 15 acres, just south of downtown Monroe, Georgia. Its houses, mostly wood-framed, were built between the 1850s and 1930s along the town's main thoroughfare. The earliest is the John Felker House, built around 1857-1860 by Thomas Snow, which blends Plantation Plain and American Gothic features and later gained a Victorian porch with jigsaw detailing. Two large houses stand out: the Walker-Field House, built after 1894 for banker and mill president B.S. Walker, and the Neo-classical Wright-Henson House from the early 1900s. Smaller Victorian homes and bungalows fill in the rest. The district was recognized for its architecture, its informal tree-shaded landscaping, its incremental growth along a historic traffic route, and its link to merchants and industrialists who shaped Monroe's commercial and industrial growth. Commercial and industrial pressures have since trimmed the neighborhood's edges.","period_of_significance":"1850s to 1930s","architect_builder":"Thomas Snow (builder, John Felker House); architects unknown","architectural_style":"Plantation Plain, American Gothic, Victorian, Neo-classical, bungalow and early 20th century styles","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied; current use residential, office and commercial; general condition good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:40.843674-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/83003620.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206680","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Broad_Street_Historic_District_(Monroe,_Georgia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q49563211"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/walton-county/south-broad-street-historic-district-83003620/"}
