Development dates from about 1900 to 1927.","why_significant":"The district shows the local carpenter tradition in late Victorian and Craftsman/Bungalow houses typical of small south Georgia towns. It also reflects the railroad and the 1927-28 paved Dixie Highway, a characteristic linear railroad-town layout, a pecan grove landscape, and ties to the Bacon and Glausier families.","narrative":"Seven modest houses and a masonry service station line both sides of the railroad tracks south of Baconton's commercial center, forming a narrow district of about 22 acres. Most buildings are frame, no taller than one and one-half stories, and designed in late Victorian or Craftsman/Bungalow styles by local craftsmen. The land was once owned by Major Robert J. Bacon, who sold roughly 200 acres to John R. Pinson, Sr.; the Pinsons built here in 1902, and members of the Glausier family built several houses soon after. The railroad, laid in 1869-70, gave rise to the town, and the Dixie Highway, paved in 1927-28 as the first paved road in Mitchell County outside city streets, prompted the service station's construction in 1927. Lawns, trees and a pecan grove give the area its landscape character. It remains one of only two historic residential neighborhoods in Baconton.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1900-1927","architect_builder":"Architect unknown; builders Thomas Jefferson Glausier and others","architectural_style":"Late Victorian and Craftsman/Bungalow","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in residential use; one house is covered with paneling and one modern ranch-style house is non-historic.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:41.404263-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/83003597.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83003597/a2fe44fba3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83003597/a2fe44fba3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Blastoids","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:South_Railroad_Historic_District_2.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Blastoids</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:South_Railroad_Historic_District_2.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206378","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Railroad_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q29095043"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/mitchell-county/south-railroad-historic-district-83003597/"}
