It is also the last standing structure associated with the vanished town of Gum Pond. The congregation dates to 1857, and the church is one of the three oldest in Mitchell County.","narrative":"Mount Enon Church and Cemetery sit in a tree-shaded setting of pines and oaks, far from other buildings, about four and a half miles east of Baconton in Mitchell County, Georgia. The church is a one-story, weatherboarded frame building on brick piers, with a gable roof, a vestibule, a sanctuary and a two-tiered steeple with a belfry. Inside are beaded tongue-and-groove paneling, pine floors and original pine pews. The congregation formed in 1857, and the present building dates to 1889. It closed in 1928 after losing members. The church is the last standing structure of Gum Pond, a crossroads town that had about 400 residents in 1860 and declined after Baconton was founded in 1869 and drew people toward the railroad. It is significant as an unaltered example of a rural Georgia Baptist church and as a reminder of that lost community. The cemetery has burials from the mid-nineteenth century, and descendants gather each year to remember Gum Pond.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition and unaltered, on its original site.
