It is one of two houses remaining from the \"Pireus\" phase of development along the Rivanna. Reviewers accepted it because, although altered, it is significant for its association with the 19th-century growth of the Woolen Mills.","narrative":"Built between about 1835 and 1840, this brick building at 1901 East Market Street in Charlottesville began as a store serving a growing industrial settlement on the Rivanna River. William Hunter Meriwether, an entrepreneur who bought the land in 1825, named the area \"Pireus\" as the port city of Charlottesville and built a toll bridge, mills and a cotton factory there. The store was probably meant to serve the factory's workers. The factory later developed into the Charlottesville Woolen Mills. The building is a rectangular, gable-front vernacular structure. Its facade is laid in Flemish bond, the other walls in American bond, and the roof, chimneys and Victorian porch appear to be later additions. After several owners, the property passed to the Woolen Mills in 1875 and became a residence. It is one of two houses surviving from the Pireus phase and recalls the self-contained mill community that once included a church, a school and workers' housing.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"No identifiable style; simple vernacular structure","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as in good condition; used as a single-family residence at the time of the survey.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:57.568821-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/91/6786/41678691/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/83003272.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83003272/7abbb127e1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83003272/7abbb127e1-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Piereus_Store.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Piereus_Store.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41678691","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piereus_Store","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15266250"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/charlottesville/piereus-store-83003272/"}
