It began as a one-room log building in the mid-18th century and was expanded in the late 18th century.","why_significant":"It is one of the few surviving taverns in Albemarle County and the only one with a rare surviving tap-bar cage, inscribed \"C. Buster, 1786, A.D.\" It stands at the site of the D.S. Tree and the zero milepost of the Three Notched Road. It illustrates vernacular tavern life during the westward migration, and Chief Justice John Marshall owned it from 1810.","narrative":"Beside Route 250 just east of Ivy, this two-story log and frame building began as a one-room log structure, traditionally a claims house on the Three Notched Road, the route from Richmond to the Shenandoah Valley. A frame section added in the late 18th century, possibly 1795, turned it into a tavern, and it served travelers until about 1850. It marks the site of the D.S. Tree and the road's zero milepost. Its most distinctive feature is a grated tap-bar cage uncovered during a 1976 restoration, inscribed \"C. Buster, 1786, A.D.\" Claudius Buster kept the tavern until his death in 1807. Chief Justice John Marshall owned the property from 1810, trading Kentucky land for it. After 1850 a family converted it to a residence, and it later returned to commercial use. Few Albemarle taverns survive, and this is the only one known with a tap-bar cage, so it records early tavern life in Piedmont Virginia.","period_of_significance":"Mid- to late 18th century","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Central-passage, single-pile 'I' house with Federal-style interior details","criteria":[],"status_note":"Restored in 1976 and described as in excellent condition; returned to commercial use and also occupied as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.9531-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/39/6793/41679339/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/83003255.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83003255/4dea626700-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83003255/4dea626700-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":null,"credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:D._S._Tavern,_U.S._Route_250_West,_Charlottesville,_Charlottesville,_VA_HABS_VA.2-CHAR.V,8-_(sheet_3_of_5).png\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:D._S._Tavern,_U.S._Route_250_West,_Charlottesville,_Charlottesville,_VA_HABS_VA.2-CHAR.V,8-_(sheet_3_of_5).png"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679339","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D._S._Tavern","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712227"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/albemarle-county/d-s-tavern-83003255/"}
