Main Street in Brenham, Washington County, Texas, built in 1873 as a banking house and law office. It sits at the southwest corner of Main and Market Streets.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it one of the most architecturally significant structures in Brenham's commercial center. Italianate style is uncommon in the town, and the building's three street elevations make it distinctive. It was also the office of one of the town's earliest private banks, organized in 1866.","narrative":"Built in 1873 at the corner of Main and Market Streets in Brenham, this masonry building housed the Bassett and Bassett bank on the ground floor and law offices above. Brothers Benjamin Henry and Thomas Jefferson Bassett, originally from Louisiana, founded the bank in 1866, and it operated as a privately owned, unchartered institution until it closed in 1884. The law practice of Sayles and Bassett continued in the building afterward. Wild and Company Brickyard constructed it, and a local newspaper called it one of the most tasty and valuable business houses in town. Round-arched openings, stucco hood moldings, plaster-covered pilasters and brick stringcourses mark its Italianate design, a style uncommon in Brenham. In the early 1900s the Milroy family added a third floor and an extra bay, matching the original materials and detailing, and lived on the second floor. The original vault door, decorated in gold gilt, survives. Recent renovation has repaired the exterior and cleared the first floor.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Wild and Company Brickyard","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Marked occupied and in good condition; recently renovated, with exterior plaster and windows repaired and later additions cleared from the original first-floor banking offices.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:18.579074-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/22/9739/40973922/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/83003168.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83003168/ecd639f562-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83003168/ecd639f562-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"i_am_jim","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bassett_and_Bassett_Banking_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">i_am_jim</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bassett_and_Bassett_Banking_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"04000154","name":"Brenham Downtown Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/texas/brenham-downtown-historic-district-04000154/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40973922","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110002476"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/washington-county/bassett-and-bassett-banking-house-83003168/"}
