It was built in 1906 to designs by San Antonio architect Leo M. J. Dielmann.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that the church is a well-crafted example of Gothic Revival architecture with outstanding brickwork. Its interior painting, done in 1912, is described as one of the most elaborate and sophisticated examples of decorative church painting in Texas. It is also the central focus of High Hill and reflects the German and Czech/Moravian heritage of its settlers.","narrative":"St. Mary's, formally the Nativity of Mary, Blessed Virgin Catholic Church, is the most prominent building in the rural community of High Hill, Texas. Built in 1906 of red brick on a concrete foundation scored to resemble ashlar, it was designed by San Antonio architect Leo M. J. Dielmann and built by Frank Bohlmann of Schulenburg. The Gothic Revival design includes buttresses, a polygonal apse flanked by sacristies, a slate gabled roof, lancet windows and a square tower with an octagonal spire. It is the third church on land deeded to the congregation in 1868, and it reuses 18 stained-glass windows bought between 1884 and 1889. German Catholic and Moravian Czech settlers founded the parish. The interior was painted in 1912 by San Antonio painters Ferdinand Stockert and Hermann Kern, who combined freehand work and stencilling in blue, ochre, green and gold. Marbled columns and gilded vaulting make it one of the most sophisticated painted church interiors in Texas.","period_of_significance":"1906-1912","architect_builder":"Architect Leo M. J.
