It was built up over several decades by Nils Brandhagen, a teacher at the Turkey Creek School, and his brother-in-law John Olson.","narrative":"Sited on a bluff about one mile north of the old townsite of Norse, the Brandhagen farm in Bosque County preserves buildings from three eras of Norwegian settlement life. Nils Brandhagen, a teacher at the Turkey Creek School, built the first residence around 1873. It is a limestone structure that now stands as a roofless ruin with a tree growing inside its walls, and it was apparently used as a barn after a newer house went up. In 1883 Brandhagen built a wood-frame house with a broken-pitch gable roof just up the hill. In 1912, with his brother-in-law John Olson, he added a one-and-a-half-story, T-shaped wing that amounted to a new house, with a south-facing porch on chamfered columns, dormer-like gables and herringbone siding. A frame garage and two gabled barns also contribute to the property. The farm is valued for keeping three examples of vernacular architecture within the Norwegian settlement.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Nils Brandhagen and his brother-in-law John Olson (1912 house)","architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Present use listed as private residence and ruins; the present house is described as in good condition, and the stone house is a roofless ruin.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:19.31087-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/5/9684/40968405/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/83003096.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40968405","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110000379"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/bosque-county/brandhagen-houses-83003096/"}
