The building was constructed between 1801 and 1808 by Edward Harlin.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is significant for its association with Henry George, journalist, social reformer and political economist, who was born there in 1839 and lived there for ten years. It also argues the house is a rare surviving example of a modest Philadelphia row house of its period, documented in measured drawings accepted by the Historic American Buildings Survey.","narrative":"Built between 1801 and 1808 by the small builder Edward Harlin, this three-story brick row house on South Tenth Street in Philadelphia was a modest dwelling of Flemish bond brickwork with a connecting stairhall called the piazza. Economist and social reformer Henry George was born on the second floor front chamber in 1839 and lived there until he was about ten. The house is valued as the only surviving example of a poor man's Philadelphia row house from its period to have been studied through detailed measured drawings and documentary research. Such simple dwellings are seldom preserved. George is remembered for Progress and Poverty, which proposed taxing the unearned rent of land as a remedy for economic depression. Alterations in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries changed the front elevation, but the back building and piazza survive largely unchanged.","period_of_significance":"1801-1808","architect_builder":"Edward Harlin (builder)","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"The front house has been altered, including a mansard roof and a bay window added in the late 19th or early 20th century, while the back building and piazza remain much as originally built.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:33.049522-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/83002268.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83002268/4d22e24806-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83002268/4d22e24806-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_George_Birthplace.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_George_Birthplace.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71997464","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_George_Birthplace","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5721864"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/philadelphia/george-henry-birthplace-83002268/"}
