The two original wings date from its 1852 construction by John Kennedy, and a frame wing was probably added about 1920.","why_significant":"The nomination describes it as a fine example of the Italian villa style that retains many exterior and interior features. Its first-floor Egyptian Revival door and window enframements are regarded as possibly the only such millwork in the National Park System, and its plaster ceilings are described as superb. It is also one of the few structures to survive the decline of the local lime and blast furnace industry.","narrative":"Built in 1852 by John Kennedy on a knoll overlooking the village of Port Kennedy, this three-story, five-bay masonry mansion in the Italianate style has a central four-story tower and a line of rear wings. Kennedy was the youngest of Alexander Kennedy's eight children. He entered the stock business in 1839 and in 1842 bought the lime works at Port Kennedy, which he developed into one of the largest lime operations in the area. The house is listed for its interior. The first-floor rooms have high, monumental proportions, and their door and window frames narrow upward in an Egyptian Revival pattern. The plaster ceilings, with carved floral mouldings and rococo appliqués in the drawing room, are regarded as superb craftsmanship. A cast iron porch with grapevine and morning glory treillage surrounds the main block. Kennedy died in 1877, and the property passed through six owners before the National Park Service acquired it in 1978.","period_of_significance":"1852, ca. 1920","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate; interior Egyptian Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Altered; the building was remodelled into apartments about 1950, the porches and roof are deteriorated, and the building is unoccupied.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:33.468648-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/83002262.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83002262/48e78fa4cd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83002262/48e78fa4cd-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Jack Boucher","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:KennedyMansionValleyForge.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jack Boucher</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:KennedyMansionValleyForge.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"66000657","name":"Valley Forge National Historical Park","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/valley-forge-national-historical-park-66000657/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71997846","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kennedy_Mansion_(Valley_Forge)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6389647"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/montgomery-county/kennedy-mansion-83002262/"}
