It reflects the shift of the commercial center toward Park Avenue West and the consolidation of smaller banks in a prosperous era. It also housed one of the city's three major banks.","narrative":"Rising eight stories above the northwest corner of North Main Street and Park Avenue West in Mansfield, this steel-frame bank building was completed in 1929. Althouse and Jones designed it with a terra-cotta exterior, a two-story base with a round-arched arcade, recessed spandrels on the shaft, and Gothic-style ornament above the top-floor windows. A low gable-roofed penthouse gives the top a stepped look. It was built for the Richland Trust Co., formed in 1929 when the Richland Savings Bank, opened in 1898, merged with the Bank of Mansfield, opened in 1893. It stands on the site of the earlier Odd Fellows Hall. Together with the Farmers Savings & Trust building nearby, it is one of Mansfield's only modernistic skyscrapers, and it marks the end of the 1920s building boom and the westward shift of the commercial center along Park Avenue. Street-level windows and the banking hall interior have been altered.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Althouse and Jones","architectural_style":"Modernistic (also described as Neo-gothic terra-cotta decoration)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Inventory lists the building as in bank use with exterior condition good; street-level windows and the main banking hall interior have been altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.861941-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/83002044.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83002044/edf660fb2d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83002044/edf660fb2d-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"User:OHWiki","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Richland_Trust_Building.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">User:OHWiki</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Richland_Trust_Building.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100004214","name":"Downtown Mansfield Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/downtown-mansfield-historic-district-100004214/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71986006","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richland_Trust_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q85797196"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/richland-county/richland-trust-building-83002044/"}
