It is the only church in the city with a porte cochere. It was built on part of the former estate of U.S. Senator John Sherman and represents early 20th century church design.","narrative":"Central United Methodist Church is a one-story limestone church at 378 Park Avenue West in Mansfield, Ohio, built around 1910. Its rock-faced stone walls, gabled Spanish tile roof, large rose window and corner tower make it visually prominent among the surrounding wood frame and brick houses. A porte cochere with a stone arched entrance stands at the west front corner, a feature found on no other church in the city, and an entrance porch sits at the east corner. Carved stone string courses and window moldings add detail, while the interior has stained glass windows and exposed beams. A large modern addition at the rear houses classrooms. The congregation formed as Mansfield grew westward around 1900, and the church occupies part of the former estate of U.S. Senator John Sherman, whose mansion was demolished and land subdivided after his death in 1900. It was recognized for its architecture as a distinctive variation on Neo-gothic style.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Neo-gothic (also described in the inventory as Richardsonian Romanesque)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Inventory lists the church in present use as a church, with interior and exterior condition both good and a large modern classroom addition at the rear.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.99061-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/83002027.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83002027/331e933b66-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83002027/331e933b66-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"User:OHWiki","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Central_United_Methodist_Church.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">User:OHWiki</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Central_United_Methodist_Church.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71986020","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_United_Methodist_Church_(Mansfield,_Ohio)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5061951"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/richland-county/central-united-methodist-church-83002027/"}
