Clement.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an outstanding example of High Victorian Italianate architecture. It also represents Wauseon's development through the Clement family, whose business ventures paralleled the town's growth as county seat and agricultural center.","narrative":"This two-story frame house at 137 Clinton Street in Wauseon, Ohio, was built about 1872 for George S. Clement, a New Hampshire native who came to town in 1864 and became a dry goods merchant, a partner in the major grain mill and an organizer of the People's State Bank. The house is High Victorian Italianate, set on a rough-hewn ashlar stone foundation. Two adjoining three-sided bays dominate the facade. A mansard-like roof of shaped slates, carved brackets and wrought iron cresting crowns it. Inside, unusual Eastlake-style cast-iron radiators patented in 1876 survive, along with a leaded glass entry door and an Italianate stair. A carriage house stands at the rear of the lot. The property was listed as an outstanding architectural example and as a record of Wauseon's growth through one prominent family. Clement's descendants, including his daughter Minerva and grandson George C. Davies, a state senator and bank officer, kept the home until 1981.","period_of_significance":"c. 1872","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"High Victorian Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition and occupied as a private residence; at the time of the form it was held in trust by an estate, with sale negotiations underway.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.223886-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/83001973.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001973/36c5868fc3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001973/36c5868fc3-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_S._Clement_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:George_S._Clement_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71988632","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_S._Clement_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5544142"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/fulton-county/clement-george-s-house-83001973/"}
