M. Moffet.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an excellent example of Queen Anne architecture in the Cleveland suburb of Lakewood. It was commissioned by an executive of the National Carbon Company, one of Cleveland's leading late 19th century industries. It also reflects Lakewood's role as a residential \"City of Homes\" for Cleveland businessmen, and it retains a high degree of integrity inside and out.","narrative":"Built between 1893 and 1895 at 1568 Grace Avenue, this large Queen Anne house in Lakewood, Ohio, was designed by Cleveland architect L. M. Moffet for Harvey Hackenberg, Secretary-Treasurer of the National Carbon Company. It cost $28,000 to build. The exterior has an octagonal corner tower with a bell-cast roof, projecting gables with wide bargeboards, a wraparound veranda on Tuscan columns, and a slate roof. A carriage house at the rear keeps its original horse stalls and hired man's quarters. Inside, a stairway of imported Norwegian oak, custom gas-fitted chandeliers with opalescent glass, and a different wood in each principal room remain largely intact. The third floor holds a ballroom, billiard room and turret card room. The house was listed for its architecture and for its link to Lakewood's growth as a residential suburb of Cleveland, where many nearby homes are smaller imitations of the same style.","period_of_significance":"1893-1895","architect_builder":"L.
