It also forms part of the historic streetscape of Raleigh's main commercial street and reflects the city's commercial development, housing a hardware store, a clothier and later a Woolworth store.","narrative":"Built between 1896 and 1903 for Raleigh hardware dealer J.C.S. Lumsden, this three-story brick commercial building at 226 Fayetteville Street Mall carries a decorative embossed metal facade on its third floor. The facade uses broadly interpreted classical details, including a cornice with dentils and anthemions, garland swags, arched windows framed in egg-and-dart molding, and engaged columns. It is the only surviving metal storefront on the street, which became a pedestrian mall in 1977. The Lumsden family ran a hardware store here until about 1907. Kirby's Five and Dime followed, then C.R. Boone's clothing store from 1911 to 1926, and the F.W. Woolworth Company from 1926 until 1972. The building was then left empty and deteriorated badly, and the city threatened demolition in 1976. The first and second floor facades have been altered. New owners planned a renovation for a jewelry store, with a preservation easement.","period_of_significance":"1896-1972","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Neo-Classical (embossed metal facade)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Described as deteriorated and vacant since 1972; a renovation for use as a jewelry store was in the design phase at the time of the form.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:57.066127-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/13/7225/47722513/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/83001923.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001923/b6fe8ad58a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001923/b6fe8ad58a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Cgb628","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lumsden-Boone_Building_3-30-2013.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cgb628</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lumsden-Boone_Building_3-30-2013.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"07001412","name":"Fayetteville Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/fayetteville-street-historic-district-07001412/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722513","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumsden%E2%80%93Boone_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6703442"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wake-county/lumsden-boone-building-83001923/"}
