It is also tied to Surry County's tobacco economy and to William Milton Cundiff, an educator who helped shape the county's public school system.","narrative":"Set on a hill above the Yadkin River bottomlands near Siloam, this two-story brick farmhouse with a low hipped roof was probably built soon after a Civil War fire in 1865 destroyed an earlier house on the property. It may incorporate parts of that earlier building. Two brick sections, laid in five-to-one and six-to-one common bond, are joined by a passage, and each first-floor room opens onto a full-length porch with chamfered posts and sawnwork brackets. The plan is unlike any other in the county, and the house is one of only three surviving pre-1900 rural masonry dwellings in Surry County. Farmer C. C. Cundiff built it. His son William Milton Cundiff later became a merchant, principal of Siloam Academy, county school superintendent and Board of Education member. In 1949 the property passed to the Hardy family, prominent tobacco growers. Outbuildings and a stone-walled family cemetery remain, and the house now shelters farm workers.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1865","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Vernacular Greek Revival with later Victorian details","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Occupied by farm workers and described as remaining in good repair; the house sits on part of a large working farm.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.41994-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/2/7223/47722302/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/83001918.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722302","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C._C._Cundiff_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19902172"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/surry-county/cundiff-c-c-house-83001918/"}
