Main Street in Mount Airy, Surry County, North Carolina, remodelled around 1908 from an earlier house probably built between 1869 and 1875.","why_significant":"The house is tied to two prominent Mount Airy figures, lawyer and judge William Franklin Carter Sr. and his son W. Frank Carter Jr., who was mayor from 1945 to 1961. It is also considered one of the most outstanding examples of Neo-Classical Revival architecture in Surry County.","narrative":"Set back from South Main Street behind a landscaped lawn, this large frame house in Mount Airy was remodelled around 1908 into the Neo-Classical Revival style. An earlier house, probably built by Henry Sparger between 1869 and 1875, was moved back from the street and enlarged. The facade features a two-story Ionic portico over a one-story Doric porch, granite chimneys, and a center-hall interior with Colonial Revival detailing and nine fireplaces. No architect or builder is known. The house was the home of William Franklin Carter Sr., a lawyer for more than sixty years, first president of the Surry County Bar Association, special Superior Court judge and three-term mayor. His son W. Frank Carter Jr., an industrial organizer, served as mayor from 1945 to 1961, and he and his wife Carrie were behind the county history Footprints in the Hollows. At the time of listing the house was being converted to five apartments.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Neo-Classical Revival","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Being converted to five apartments at the time of nomination, with care taken to retain original architectural features; condition listed as excellent.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:56.518666-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/22/7223/47722322/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/83001917.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001917/d4f97970b5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001917/d4f97970b5-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:W.F._Carter_House_from_east.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:W.F._Carter_House_from_east.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"85002931","name":"Mount Airy Historic District (Additional Documentation)","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/mount-airy-historic-district-additional-documentation-85002931/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722322","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._F._Carter_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19945992"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/surry-county/carter-w-f-house-83001917/"}
