It was moved in 1976 to a site on US 158 west of Murfreesboro, Northampton County, North Carolina.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is one of a few surviving 18th-century gambrel-roof hall-and-parlor dwellings in northeastern North Carolina, with refined Georgian detailing. It is also tied to the Parker family, long-time farmers in the region, and illustrates the dwellings of yeoman farmers of the period 1790-1860.","narrative":"Francis Parker built this one-and-a-half-story gambrel-roofed farmhouse in the last quarter of the eighteenth century on land near Panther Swamp in eastern Northampton County. It follows a hall-and-parlor plan with a rear shed and carries refined Georgian detail, including raised-panel wainscoting, fluted-pilaster mantels, a six-panel entrance door and a turned stair rail. Parker was a Quaker yeoman farmer, and the house reflects the modest but sturdy dwellings of that class. It stayed in the Parker family for generations, passing through his wife Sarah, son Lewis and later descendants, until the 1940s, when it was used for storage and its foundation and chimneys were removed. In 1976 a descendant bought it, moved it seven miles to US 158 and began restoring it with a high brick foundation and rebuilt chimneys. Gambrel-roof houses of this type are now rare in northeastern North Carolina, which is the basis for its recognition.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian details; hall-and-parlor plan gambrel-roof dwelling","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Restoration was in progress, with the house on a new raised brick foundation, reconstructed chimneys and a private residence use; condition marked good.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.334897-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/76/7215/47721576/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/83001900.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001900/234a290ae0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001900/234a290ae0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Frank Womble","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Francis_Parker_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Frank Womble</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Francis_Parker_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721576","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Parker_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19987454"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/northampton-county/parker-francis-house-83001900/"}
