It is also associated with the Overcarsh family, who lived there from 1879 until 1966, including Methodist minister Elias Overcarsh and his son and grandson, both Charlotte businessmen.","narrative":"Located in Charlotte's Fourth Ward, this Queen Anne house grew from a small two-room dwelling once occupied by tinsmith Daniel H. Byerly. Elias Overcarsh bought the lots in 1879 and expanded the house over the following years. It reached roughly its present form by his death in 1898, with additions continuing to about 1900. The irregular massing includes extended bays on the west and southeast, a southwest tower with scalloped shingles and a conical roof, decorative gables, and a porch with carved brackets. Inside are Eastlake surrounds, Colonial Revival mantels, pine floors and a center hall with wainscot. Overcarsh was a Methodist minister who served eight congregations. His son Bryan Jefferson Overcarsh was a Charlotte merchant, and his grandson Bryan Jr. was a longtime head cashier at North Carolina National Bank. The family kept the house until 1966. Its tower, porch, bays and woodwork represent the better vernacular houses of the late nineteenth-century Carolina piedmont.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Unknown (built and enlarged by Elias Overcarsh)","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence; in good condition and restored in the mid-1970s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:58:58.256065-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/36/7213/47721336/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/83001896.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001896/5a406ab67a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001896/5a406ab67a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"James Willamor","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Overcash_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">James Willamor</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Overcash_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721336","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overcarsh_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19987433"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/mecklenburg-county/overcarsh-house-83001896/"}
