It was designed by Frank Benton of Wilson and constructed by the Dixon Construction Company.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is a rare and unique local example of Art Deco architecture, with an angular composition, geometric decoration and modern materials. It is also associated with automobile row, the cluster of dealerships southwest of the Market House in the 1920s and 1930s, and with Fayetteville's first Chevrolet dealership.","narrative":"Built between 1934 and 1937 in Fayetteville, the M & O Chevrolet Company building is a one-story Art Deco dealership and service center designed by Frank Benton of Wilson and constructed by the Dixon Construction Company. Its horizontal massing is broken by a vertical central tower, and its rounded corners, stepped roofline and black glass tower ornament reflect the style. Interior features include a tile floor of white, black, green and red shapes, geometric ceiling patterns and wide curved woodwork. Behind the showroom, a barrel-vaulted service center of common bond brick is supported by metal trusses, leaving no posts in the work area. The company, formed in 1926, was Fayetteville's first Chevrolet dealership and occupied the site on Franklin and Donaldson Streets. The building is regarded as the only surviving Art Deco building in the local architectural landscape and is associated with the automobile row district.","period_of_significance":"1934-1937","architect_builder":"Frank Benton (architect), Wilson, NC; Dixon Construction Company (builder)","architectural_style":"Art Deco","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Continues to serve as a Chevrolet dealership","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:41.281031-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/43/7175/47717543/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/83001858.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001858/dec088c814-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001858/dec088c814-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Gerry Dincher","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:M%26O_Chevrolet.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Gerry Dincher</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:M%26O_Chevrolet.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717543","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M_%26_O_Chevrolet_Company","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18217032"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/cumberland-county/m-and-o-chevrolet-company-83001858/"}
