It keeps almost complete integrity of form and detail despite conversion to a house, and it marks the community's development.","narrative":"Built around 1850 at the corner of Awosting and Decker Roads in Shawangunk, this one-room frame schoolhouse measures thirty by thirty-four feet. It has a gabled standing-seam metal roof, a brick end chimney, 12/12 double-hung windows, corner pilasters and a projecting entrance with a diagonally planked, beaded door. The land was donated to the town by the Jansen family, and the name Pearl Street probably reflects the family's ties to Pearl Street in New York City. An 1875 atlas lists it as Public School #11. It served as a school until 1942-43, when Jansen heirs sold it. The interior was divided in 1953 and rear additions followed in 1956 and 1965, yet wainscotting, cupboards, coat pegs and a stove mark survive. It was listed as a rare pre-Civil War school and the only public building in its multiple resource area.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a school until 1942-43, now a residence in good condition; a noncontributing shed and the remains of an old well are on the 1.5-acre parcel.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.297567-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/83001820.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001820/4b42154080-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001820/4b42154080-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pearl_Street_Schoolhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pearl_Street_Schoolhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315268","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pearl_Street_Schoolhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7158175"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ulster-county/pearl-street-schoolhouse-83001820/"}
