It was the miller's house for a mill complex.","why_significant":"The house is significant as a distinctive example of Greek Revival architecture in the Shawangunk Valley Multiple Resource Area. It is also the only surviving part of an industrial complex of sawmill and gristmill dating to the eighteenth century. Its integrity rests on its form, original materials, iron grillework, and elaborate interior woodwork and door moldings.","narrative":"Overlooking the Shawangunk Kill at the Ulster and Orange county line, this one and one-half story frame house was built around 1835 by Roe and Arminda Coleman. It served as the miller's house for Red Mills, where a sawmill and gristmill once stood nearby. Both mills burned in the mid-twentieth century, leaving only traces of a dam and mill race beside the house. The house is a distinctive Greek Revival design, with a five-bay center hall plan, a doorway with sidelights, pilasters and a transom, and eyebrow windows fitted with decorative iron grills. Two-tiered veranda piers and a railing mark the southeast side, which was originally the front. Inside, the living room, dining room and back parlor retain carved and panelled woodwork, corner cabinets and mantles. A cellar cooking fireplace survives. A 1950s dormer and a rear garage wing are later additions. The nominated parcel covers about 8.5 acres and excludes the mill site, whose archeological potential has not been evaluated.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect unknown; builder Roe Coleman","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as good, with no known threats.
