The architect and builder are unknown.","why_significant":"The house is considered a distinctive example of the Gothic Revival cottage style popularized in pattern books of the 1840s and 1850s. Its asymmetrical form, steeply pitched cross gable roof, ornamental bargeboard and verticality reflect the picturesque ideals of the period. It is one of only two surviving Gothic Revival cottages in Bath.","narrative":"Set on a small lot in a densely built residential neighborhood just west of Washington Park in Bath, this one-and-one-half story clapboard cottage was built around 1845-1850 in the Gothic Revival style. Its steeply pitched cross gable roof carries a scroll-sawn bargeboard, and the front gable holds a pair of tall, narrow windows beneath a louvred diamond-shaped ventilator topped by a triangular label mold. First-story windows have shouldered label molds. An early twentieth century porch wraps the southeast corner, and dormers were later added to the rear wing. The house reflects pattern-book designs popular in the 1840s and 1850s and is one of only two surviving Gothic Revival cottages in the village. It was probably built by Hiram Potter, who bought the lot in 1840. David Van Camp, a local insurance agent, acquired the property in 1850. The house remains a residence and keeps its original site.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a residence, as originally; condition rated good, with no known threats to the building.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.237376-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/83001802.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001802/2243689491-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001802/2243689491-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Potter-Van_Camp_House_Oct_09.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Potter-Van_Camp_House_Oct_09.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314706","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potter-Van_Camp_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7235245"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/steuben-county/potter-van-camp-house-83001802/"}
