It is also historically significant as the site of the first bank in St. Lawrence County. It later served as a railroad ticket office, an express company agency and a law office.","narrative":"Built beginning in 1830 on State Street in downtown Ogdensburg, this small Greek Revival building first housed the Ogdensburg Bank, the earliest bank in St. Lawrence County. Its front is faced in smooth white marble quarried locally, while the other walls are rough-cut limestone. A pedimented gable, raking cornice, plain entablature and corner pilasters give it a classical look. The bank closed in 1858, and the building later held a railroad ticket agency and an insurance office, then an express company office from 1873 until 1961. A loading dock and barn added during that period were removed in 1961. A law practice moved in during 1962 and remains there. Urban renewal removed the surrounding buildings, and a mall now borders the site on three sides. The exterior has changed little, and original door and window surrounds, moldings and hardware survive inside. It is notable for being the only marble-fronted example among the city's early stone buildings.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in commercial use as a law office; exterior relatively unaltered, interior considerably altered, condition rated excellent.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.607235-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/83001792.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001792/7d9992f647-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001792/7d9992f647-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Acker_and_Evans_Law_Office.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Acker_and_Evans_Law_Office.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321858","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acker_and_Evans_Law_Office","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4674232"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/st-lawrence-county/acker-and-evans-law-office-83001792/"}
