Its cast-stone mascaron window keystones, roughly 20 different caricatures, recall Romanesque architecture in Germany. The whole district was built by one team of builders from plans by Ridgewood's most prolific architectural firm, and it retains a high degree of integrity.","narrative":"Fifty-one brick tenements and row houses form this two-acre district in Ridgewood, Queens, along Linden Street, Grove Street and St. John's Road between Fairview and Woodward Avenues. Built between 1907 and 1910 of light brown, iron-spot brick, most are three-story buildings with two apartments per floor, alongside a few two- and three-story row houses. Romanesque Revival detailing includes corbelled brick pilasters, dentil courses, brick laid to imitate rusticated stone, pressed metal cornices, low brownstone stoops and ornate ironwork. The standout feature is the cast-stone mascaron keystone set in splayed lintels. About twenty different caricature faces are used, so no face repeats on a single facade and no two consecutive buildings share the same combination. The ornament recalled German Romanesque architecture for the German developers who built Ridgewood. One team, Spaeth and Senger of Brooklyn, built the whole district from plans by Louis Berger and Co. Few alterations have occurred, and all cornices survive.","period_of_significance":"1908-1910","architect_builder":"Spaeth and Senger of Brooklyn (builders); plans by Louis Berger and Co.","architectural_style":"Romanesque Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Buildings remain largely intact; typical alterations are new doors, ironwork and awnings; no non-contributing buildings.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.291979-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/83001772.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001772/eae645879a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001772/eae645879a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Peter Greenberg","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Grove%E2%80%93Linden%E2%80%93St._John_026.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Peter Greenberg</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Grove%E2%80%93Linden%E2%80%93St._John_026.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314440","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grove%E2%80%93Linden%E2%80%93St._John%27s_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5611368"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/queens/grove-linden-st-johns-historic-district-83001772/"}
