Allen.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a fine example of an Italianate farmhouse and a rare surviving one in Queens. It is also one of the few farmhouses from nineteenth-century New York City that remain. Its history ties to the Allen family farm and later to the William P. Douglas estate and the Douglas Manor suburb.","narrative":"This two-and-one-half-story white clapboard farmhouse at 29 Center Drive in Douglaston, Queens, dates to the late 1840s. It is five bays wide and three deep, with front and rear porches, fluted Doric columns, paired Italianate brackets, eared window moldings and a bracketed octagonal cupola. Inside, a central hall plan, a double parlor with marble mantelpieces and an original central stairway survive. Benjamin P. Allen is believed to have built it soon after acquiring the site in 1847. He reportedly hosted a school for community children in 1865 and served Zion Episcopal Church as vestryman and sometimes warden. The land later became part of the William P. Douglas estate, where the house was probably a guest house, and then part of the Douglas Manor suburban development after 1905-06. It is valued as a rare Italianate farmhouse in Queens and one of few nineteenth-century farmhouses left in New York City.","period_of_significance":"1848-1850","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in excellent condition, unaltered, on its original site, and used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.615143-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/83001760.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001760/18f387e557-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001760/18f387e557-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Peter Greenberg","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Allen-Beville_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Peter Greenberg</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Allen-Beville_House.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"05000937","name":"Douglaston Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/douglaston-historic-district-05000937/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321056","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen-Beville_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4731479"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/queens/allen-beville-house-83001760/"}
