Haff.","why_significant":"It is one of very few surviving New York City houses in a transitional style combining Federal and Greek Revival elements. Hundreds of similar houses once existed, but only a handful remain and many are heavily altered. It is also a characteristic upper middle-class residence of the 1830s, built on land once part of Aaron Burr's Richmond Hill estate.","narrative":"Built in 1833-34 for John P. Haff, a leather inspector, this three-story townhouse at 203 Prince Street in Manhattan has a Flemish bond brick front and a brownstone basement. Its style bridges Federal and Greek Revival design. The Federal-style entrance sits above a high stoop, with an arched doorway, Ionic columns, sidelights and a semi-elliptical fanlight, while the brownstone window lintels reflect Greek Revival taste. The third floor was raised in 1888, replacing the original peaked attic. Inside, Greek Revival woodwork and black marble mantels fill the parlors, and the second floor keeps earlier Federal detailing and original pine floors. A careful restoration in 1972 removed a later fire escape and brought back six-over-six windows and louvered blinds. The house is valued as one of very few surviving examples of this transitional type in the city, and as a typical middle-class home of the 1830s on land once part of Aaron Burr's Richmond Hill estate.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Transitional Federal to Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition; restored by the owner in 1972 and used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.282954-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/83001731.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001731/91c3fb42c7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001731/91c3fb42c7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Gryffindor","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:203_Prince_Street_001.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Gryffindor</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:203_Prince_Street_001.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"73001215","name":"Charlton-King-Vandam Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/charlton-king-vandam-historic-district-73001215/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319612","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/203_Prince_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4630423"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/house-at-203-prince-street-83001731/"}
