It was designed by Benjamin Moscowitz of York & Sawyer. Its marble, cast iron and bronze interior and the ironwork by Samuel Yellin add to its distinction.","narrative":"Rising at the meeting of Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue just north of Verdi Square, this bank was built in 1926-28 for the Central Savings Bank, which began in 1859 as the German Savings Bank and took its new name during World War I. Benjamin Moscowitz of York & Sawyer shaped the building as a trapezoid to fit its lot, modelling it on an Italian Renaissance palace. Rusticated walls are divided into a base, two middle sections and an attic story under a hipped tile roof. Stone lions flank a clock above the 73rd Street entrance, and wrought-iron grilles, lanterns and gargoyle-topped window guards were made by the studio of Samuel Yellin. Inside, a two-story banking room of about 10,000 square feet has stone piers, a coffered barrel vault, mosaic floors and bronze grilles. It is described as Manhattan's only freestanding bank building and an outstanding neo-Renaissance design.","period_of_significance":"1926-28","architect_builder":"Benjamin Moscowitz of York & Sawyer","architectural_style":"Neo-Renaissance (Italian Renaissance palazzo)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in excellent condition, unaltered and on its original site; used commercially as a bank.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.393554-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/83001720.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001720/34f2ef0304-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001720/34f2ef0304-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Jim.henderson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:German_Savings_Bank_W73_jeh.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim.henderson</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:German_Savings_Bank_W73_jeh.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319354","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Bank_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q52205256"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/central-savings-bank-83001720/"}
