It began as a mid-nineteenth century farmhouse and was extensively remodeled in the Colonial Revival style between 1900 and 1916.","why_significant":"It is the only surviving nineteenth-century structure in Valley Stream and the earliest extant building in the village. It was the home of Robert Pagan, the area's first permanent settler, who named the settlement Valley Stream in 1843. The village's first post office was established in the house.","narrative":"Located on Hendrickson Avenue in Valley Stream, this large clapboard house began as a modest mid-nineteenth century farmhouse and was later expanded into a two-story, five-bay Colonial Revival residence. Robert Pagan, a Scottish immigrant farmer, bought the property in 1841. Local records indicate the house dates to the early 1840s, and it was enlarged in 1847 with a second floor and rear kitchen wing. Pagan named the settlement Valley Stream in 1843, and his home housed the first post office. Between 1900 and 1916 the building was nearly doubled in size and given a two-story portico with Ionic columns. The east side of the interior retains Greek Revival trim and hand-hewn framing, while the west side is Colonial Revival. It is the only surviving nineteenth-century structure in the village. The village government purchased it in 1977 and is exploring its rehabilitation as a museum. The nominated parcel of under one acre is all that remains of the original Pagan farm.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial Revival (early twentieth century remodeling of a mid-nineteenth century farmhouse with Greek Revival detailing)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Owned by the village of Valley Stream, which hopes to restore it as a local historical museum.
