It is also historically significant for its many roles in the development of Leonardsville. It is the only surviving nineteenth century commercial grouping in the hamlet and its focal point.","narrative":"Three buildings on Route 8 in Leonardsville, Madison County, New York, make up the Wheeler House Complex: a residence with an attached bank wing, a commercial block, and a carriage house. John Wheeler, a bank president, enlarged his c. 1840 home in 1874 into an elaborate Italianate residence with an octagonal tower, a cupola, bracketed cornices and a balustraded porch. The bank offices occupied a two-story addition on the north side. With partner Daniel Hardin, Wheeler also built the Wheeler Block, which held a general store, a post office, other businesses and a second-floor hall used for meetings, movies and school graduations. The large carriage house retains its horse stalls and interior. The Wheeler Block was altered in the mid-twentieth century and renovated as a restaurant after 1970. The complex is described as the only surviving nineteenth century commercial grouping in the hamlet and a reminder of its mill and manufacturing past. It is used today as a hotel and restaurant.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific date 1874)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":[],"status_note":"In use as a hotel and restaurant complex; the Wheeler Block was abandoned by 1970 and then renovated as a restaurant.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.914751-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/83001706.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318750","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheeler_House_Complex","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14707773"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/madison-county/wheeler-house-complex-83001706/"}
