Its circular staircase, built by Seneca and Isaac Perry, is one of the finest surviving examples of their craftsmanship.","narrative":"Rembrandt Hall is a one and one-half story brick cottage built in 1851 on a knoll on Clinton Street in Keeseville, overlooking the village and the AuSable Valley. It was built for Emma North Peale Barton, daughter of the artist Rembrandt Peale. The symmetrical design features a central two-story entrance pavilion, bay windows, steep-pitched roof, decorative chimneys and a multi-gabled Gothic cupola, along with sawed bargeboards, label molding and turned finials. Isaac Perry designed the cottage, and he and his father Seneca Perry, noted local housewrights, built it. It was Isaac's last design before he left Keeseville for architectural training in New York City. The ornate freestanding circular staircase is considered among the finest surviving examples of the Perrys' work. Conversion to apartments in 1980 brought alterations, but the building retains substantial integrity of design, materials and workmanship and remains a prominent local landmark.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect Isaac Perry; erected by Seneca and Isaac Perry (staircase by Seneca and Isaac Perry)","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Converted to apartments in 1980; condition listed as fair, with deterioration noted as a threat.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.854534-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/83001677.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001677/e9a196c1a3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001677/e9a196c1a3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:KeesevilleNY_RembrandtHall.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:KeesevilleNY_RembrandtHall.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312313","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rembrandt_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7311580"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/essex-county/rembrandt-hall-83001677/"}
