It includes the 1885 church, the 1859 original church (later a school), an 1892 parsonage and an altered 1864 parsonage.","why_significant":"The complex is tied to the early history of the German immigrant community on Buffalo's East Side. The 1859 church was the first German Lutheran church built there. The 1885 church is an intact example of eclectic church architecture combining Gothic and Romanesque Revival features, and the 1892 parsonage is a Queen Anne style residence.","narrative":"Four buildings at the corner of Sherman and Peckham Streets in Buffalo's East Side record the story of a German Lutheran congregation. Organized in 1858 by fifteen families from Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, the group built its first brick church in 1859, the first German Lutheran church on the East Side. A parsonage followed in 1864. By the 1880s the congregation needed more room, so the original church became a four-classroom school and a larger brick church was built beside it, designed by Louis Saenger and built by Henrich Schaefer, then dedicated in 1885. It combines Gothic and Romanesque Revival details, including a 176-foot steeple, lancet windows by Leo P. Frohe, and an open timber truss interior. A Queen Anne style parsonage was added in 1892. The original parsonage, heavily altered in the twentieth century, does not contribute to the complex. The congregation served the district's German community until declining membership led to its closing in 1983. Buffalo designated the complex a city landmark in 1981.","period_of_significance":"circa 1859 - 1892","architect_builder":"Henrich Schaefer (builder); Louis Saenger, local architect, prepared the plans for the 1885 church","architectural_style":"Eclectic church architecture with Gothic and Romanesque Revival features; Queen Anne style parsonage","criteria":[],"status_note":"The congregation closed in 1983 after declining membership; the form lists the property as occupied, with the 1885 church in only minor alteration and the original parsonage altered and non-contributing.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.645772-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/83001674.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001674/b3405edd3f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001674/b3405edd3f-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._Andrew%27s_Evangelical_Lutheran_Church_Dec_09.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._Andrew%27s_Evangelical_Lutheran_Church_Dec_09.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317709","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Andrew%27s_Evangelical_Lutheran_Church_Complex","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7586879"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/erie-county/st-andrews-evangelical-lutheran-church-complex-83001674/"}
