The original section was built before 1833 and the present house dates to about 1866.","why_significant":"The house is considered an outstanding example of Gothic Revival architecture, one of only two examples of the style in the village. It is also associated with James McClurg, a prominent early settler, and with industrialist George P. York, who enlarged it in the 1860s.","narrative":"Located at 31 Union Street in Westfield, this one and one-half story frame cottage grew from a dwelling built before 1833, apparently by early settler James McClurg, who subdivided the surrounding land into residential lots. In 1866 industrialist George P. York, owner of an iron foundry on Chautauqua Creek, acquired the property and enlarged the house in the fashionable Gothic Revival style for his daughter Jennie, who married John Arthur Skinner. The old house was folded into the new structure, which has board and batten siding, a steeply pitched cross-gable roof, elaborate bargeboards, paired miter-arched windows and projecting bay windows. Early twentieth century additions include a porch and a rear shed-roofed wing. The house is regarded as the best of only two Gothic Revival examples in the village, and it embodies the verticality, irregular plan and ornamental detail of the mid-nineteenth century picturesque movement. It remains a residence in excellent condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect and builder unknown; James McClurg is the apparent builder of the original portion","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a residence, in excellent condition, with a non-contributing modern garage on the property.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.571529-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/83001661.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001661/8fff106265-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001661/8fff106265-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:York-Skinner_House_Westfield_NY_Jul_12.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:York-Skinner_House_Westfield_NY_Jul_12.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"83003895","name":"French Portage Road Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/french-portage-road-historic-district-83003895/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312273","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/York-Skinner_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8055344"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/chautauqua-county/york-skinner-house-83001661/"}
