A frame barn stands on the property.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is architecturally significant as a distinctive, substantially unaltered example of the mid-nineteenth-century Italian Villa style, one of few of its type in Westfield. Its cupola, bracketed eaves, asymmetrical massing and rounded-arch windows are typical of the style. The barn and pond recall its past as a 26-acre working farm.","narrative":"Ward House is a two-story brick residence at 118 West Main Street in Westfield, built in the late 1860s in the Italian Villa style. Its L-shaped plan has a low-pitched standing-seam metal roof, a prominent cupola with a bracketed cornice, broad eaves with scroll brackets, and rounded-arch windows capped with ornate cast-iron lintels. A porch was added late in the nineteenth century. Inside, black walnut woodwork and two white marble fireplaces survive. The house is believed to have been built for the Ward family, and S. Ward was a prominent local merchant. Dr. John Davis owned it from 1889 to 1910. The estate once covered 26 acres and operated as a working farm; it now occupies 3.3 acres. A one-and-a-half-story clapboard barn with a steep cross-gable roof and a small pond remain. The house was valued as one of the few distinctive, largely unaltered Italian Villa examples in Westfield.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italian Villa","criteria":[],"status_note":"Residential use; condition listed as good in the inventory form.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.72902-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/83001657.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001657/7362602728-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001657/7362602728-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ward_House_Westfield_NY_Jul_12.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ward_House_Westfield_NY_Jul_12.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312248","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ward_House_(Westfield,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7969025"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/chautauqua-county/ward-house-83001657/"}
