It has a one and one-half story rear wing and a frame carriage barn.","why_significant":"It is a distinctive mid-nineteenth century Greek Revival house with Italianate features. Its elaborate cast-iron ornamentation at the entrance, lintels, sills, porches and balconies is intact and unique in the village. It is also locally significant for its link to Reuben Gridley Wright, son of an early Westfield settler.","narrative":"Built around 1850 at 79 North Portage Street in Westfield, this two-story, two-bay brick house combines Greek Revival form with Italianate detail. Broad eaves on the gable roof carry paired brackets, and a one and one-half story brick wing with eyebrow windows extends from the northeast corner. Its most unusual feature is the cast-iron work: window lintels and sills, balcony rails, porch posts and friezes, and an ornate side entrance with sidelights, pilasters and an entablature. The form describes this ornamentation as intact and unique in the village. A frame carriage barn from about 1850 to 1870 stands behind the house. Reuben Gridley Wright, son of one of Westfield's earliest settlers, lived here from 1870 to 1884 with his wife Cora Pierce, a teacher, before building a Queen Anne house on East Main Street. Later the house sheltered nurses working at the Westfield Sanitarium. The house was recognized for its architecture and local associations.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival with Italianate features","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed as a residence in fair condition on its original site; the form records its use as a residence, both originally and at the time of the survey.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:42.420371-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/83001652.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001652/3eb7857bba-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001652/3eb7857bba-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WestfieldNY_79NorthPortage.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WestfieldNY_79NorthPortage.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312242","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_Mack_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5549363"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/chautauqua-county/mack-gerald-house-83001652/"}
