Its gables, dormers, stone construction and Gothic window and door details resemble a design in Vaux's Villas and Cottages (1857). It survives as a reminder of the area's suburban past, even though its estate setting is gone.","narrative":"Sunnyslope is a Gothic Revival stone house at 812 Faile Street in the Hunts Point area of the South Bronx. Built around 1859-64 for businessman Peter S. Hoe, it was once the centerpiece of a 14.6 acre estate in what was then rural Westchester County. Its dark grey stone walls with light trim, banded slate roof, steep gables, crocketed dormers and lancet windows give it the asymmetrical, picturesque profile favored in mid-nineteenth century villa design. The architect is unknown, but the house closely resembles a design published by Calvert Vaux in 1857. The surrounding land was later sold for development, and the house was sold in 1919 to a Jewish congregation. It is now used by a church. Minor changes include a small side addition, a fire escape and a neon sign, yet the building keeps a high degree of integrity. It is considered one of the finest of the few suburban estate houses left within New York City.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific dates c. 1859-64)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic Revival, Picturesque mode","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied by a church; the form rates its condition as good and altered, with a high degree of integrity retained despite minor alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.37437-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/83001644.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001644/76300d9635-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001644/76300d9635-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"jim.henderson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sunnyslope_house_Bronx_2012-09_jeh.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">jim.henderson</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sunnyslope_house_Bronx_2012-09_jeh.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316527","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunnyslope_(Bronx)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7640916"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/the-bronx/sunnyslope-83001644/"}
