It was one of the first estates built in an area planned as a private villa community in the 1850s. Its symmetrical, classical massing is unusual within the generally asymmetrical Italianate villa tradition.","narrative":"Stonehurst is a two-story Italianate villa of gray Maine granite overlooking the Hudson River in Riverdale, the Bronx. Built in the early 1860s for Robert Colgate, a New York merchant and philanthropist, it has a square plan, a low-pitched dormered roof and four differently composed facades. The north front is a classical entrance facade, while the west and south fronts have semicircular two-story projections with round-arched windows that take in views toward the Palisades. The granite was cut and finished on the site, and the interior keeps its round-arched doorways, moldings and fireplaces. The architect is unknown. The house was among the first estates in an area planned as a private villa community in the 1850s. In 1902 industrialist George W. Perkins bought it as part of an 80-acre family compound; it later became a single private residence again. It is regarded as one of the few intact Italianate picturesque villas left in New York City.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific dates: early 1860s)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate picturesque villa","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed in excellent condition, on its original site, and occupied as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.597952-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/83001638.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001638/637b2c82cd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001638/637b2c82cd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dmadeo","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Robert_Colgate_House,_Bronx_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Dmadeo</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Robert_Colgate_House,_Bronx_NY.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316459","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Colgate_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7343029"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/the-bronx/colgate-robert-house-83001638/"}
