Hinds (1845-1921), a pioneer real estate developer and civic leader in Santa Cruz. It is also significant as the finest surviving example of Stick-Eastlake residential design by architect John H. Williams, most of whose Santa Cruz buildings have been demolished.","narrative":"Built in 1888 at 529 Chestnut Street in Santa Cruz, this large Stick-Eastlake house was designed by local architect John H. Williams and constructed by William Hinds for his brother Alfred. It has an irregular hip roof, two full stories, a redwood frame with tongue-in-groove siding, and a stone foundation. A two-story gabled porch with turned columns and spindle screens anchors the front, and the interior keeps Eastlake mantels, leaded glass sliding doors, and a Spanish cedar staircase. Alfred Hinds arrived in California as a child in 1850, became a leading real estate developer who subdivided several Santa Cruz tracts, and served as a library trustee, Board of Trade organizer, and church officer. Williams designed about 60 buildings in the area between 1876 and 1892, and most have been demolished. This house is described as the finest of his Stick-Eastlake homes still standing in the county. Restoration is under way.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"John H.
