Its almost totally intact interiors resulted from alterations between 1890 and 1904 for John McMullen, a contractor who contributed to hydraulic dredging technology. The house also documents McMullen's growing prosperity.","narrative":"Located at 827 Guerrero Street in San Francisco, this wood-frame house began in 1881 as a typical two-story Stick Style residence for contractor John McMullen and his wife Lena. In 1890 McMullen hired architect Samuel Newsom, who widened the house, added a round tower, extended the rear and created basement rooms. Further additions followed in the 1890s and in 1904. The result combines the vertical Stick Style lines of the original with Queen Anne features such as a horseshoe-shaped spindle-work entry arch, patterned shingles and a witch's-cap tower. Inside, most 1890s finishes survive, including patterned hardwood floors, ornamental plaster, an Art Nouveau fireplace and a carved stair railing. McMullen was a pioneer of hydraulic dredging whose companies worked on harbors, bridges and the San Francisco Seawall. The house is valued as a work of the Newsom brothers and as a record of his career. It has served as a residential care facility since 1956.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Unknown/Samuel Newsom","architectural_style":"Queen Anne (1890 remodel of an 1881 Stick Style house)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a residential care facility since 1956; the form lists it as occupied, in good condition and altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.369159-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/83001231.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001231/575fd943e2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001231/575fd943e2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_McMullen_House_(San_Francisco).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_McMullen_House_(San_Francisco).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861208","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133500620"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/san-francisco/mcmullen-john-house-83001231/"}
