The architect and builder are unknown.","why_significant":"The house is described as one of the best remaining examples of its style and type in Sacramento, and as a rare large residential survivor in the downtown area. It is also tied to Julius Wetzlar, one of the city's founders, and to later owners who included a judge and an early state senator. A state reviewer called it the only surviving local example of the early Italianate Villa phase.","narrative":"This 2½-story wood-frame house at 1021 H Street in downtown Sacramento was built in 1870-71 for Julius Wetzlar, a German immigrant and one of the city's founders who held large blocks of local real estate. Italianate in style, it has a symmetrical form with two wings flanking a projecting central entrance bay, fluted Corinthian columns at the porch, decorative corbels, wood quoins and arched windows with hood moldings. The house was moved toward the back of its lot in 1939, and two apartment buildings were later built in front. Earlier remodeling stripped and stuccoed the facade and added apartment wings in 1923, but a recent restoration returned its original ornamentation. Later residents included a retired sheep raiser, a superior court judge and state senator Amos Catlin. It was listed for its architecture, as a surviving example of the grand residences that once lined this neighborhood, and for its associations with prominent figures. The interior now holds four apartments.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Restored to its original appearance after earlier stuccoing and stripping of ornament; interior converted to four apartments; moved toward the back of its lot in 1939.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:26.906476-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/83001226.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001226/fd10e00b15-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83001226/fd10e00b15-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Shortride","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Julius_Wetzlar_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Shortride</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Julius_Wetzlar_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860696","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_Wetzlar_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q126178500"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/sacramento-county/wetzlar-julius-house-83001226/"}
