It was built in 1857 and enlarged to the west in the 1890s.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be significant for its association with the development of Pacheco, once a major center of activity in Contra Costa County. It was the home of William T. Hendrick, owner of the county's largest flour mill. It is described as the best surviving tangible link with the old town, most of which has been altered or lost.","narrative":"This single-story house with a raised basement stands at 218 Center Avenue in Pacheco, Contra Costa County. William T. Hendrick built it in 1857 as a 20 by 40 foot rectangle with a hipped roof and encircling porch. In the 1890s it was extended to the west, adding a parlor, bedroom, bathroom and a slanted bay window with fishscale shingles in a Queen Anne manner; the interior moldings of the addition are Eastlake in character. Hendrick owned the county's largest flour mill, which stood just south of the house, and the home became a gathering place for people waiting on their flour. Pacheco was the county's hub of activity between 1858 and 1873, but floods, fires and earthquakes led its leaders to leave, and Hendrick sold in 1868. Freeway construction and remodeling have since erased most early buildings, leaving this house as the best surviving link to the old town.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne character in the 1890s addition, with Eastlake interior moldings","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied; present use is given as commercial and private residence.
